Things to do on the West Coast, New Zealand

The Paparoa Track

The Paparoa Track crosses the Paparoa Range.  It takes you through alpine tops, limestone karst landscapes, thriving rainforests and provides breathtaking views.

The Paparoa Track and Pike29 Memorial Track are shared-use tracks for hikers and mountain bikers.

This is the first purpose-built, shared-use Great Walk constructed by the Department of Conservation, and you can mountain bike the tracks year-round.

The Brunner Mine

Located just a few minutes from Kaiata is the historic Brunner Mine.  In 1896, 65 Miners were tragically killed in one single explosion when safety was not a priority.

The Brunner mine was one of several mines situated on the banks of the Grey River at an area known as “Coal Gorge” between the township of Stillwater and Taylorville.  The town of Brunner (formerly Brunnerton) is nearby.

There is a loop walk with interactive panels that leads from the Carpark next to State Highway 7 down the valley and over the refurbished Brunner Bridge to the remnants of the Brunner Mine site and a memorial statue listing the names of the miners killed.
