Enjoy a Low-Pressure Lifestyle on the West Coast

Welcome to the Grey District

The Grey District is made up of many communities. The District has a population of approximately 13,221 people (2013 Census), with the majority living in Greymouth, the West Coast’s largest town. Our local iwi is Ngāti Waewae.

Coasters enjoy a low-pressure rural or semi-rural lifestyle, which still enjoys access to a good range of amenities. With so much rainforest on our doorstep, tramping, hunting, kayaking, mountain biking, and fishing are all popular local pastimes.

One of the main attractions of the Grey District is our people. Living in relative isolation in such a rugged environment (the West Coast is New Zealand’s least populated region), Coasters are known for their self-reliance and independent ways.
